LARE
Review Program in Rhode Island
The
Rhode Island ASLA Chapter will again provide review sessions for
the 16th year! In their most recent newsletter, they remind us that
"The RIASLA sessions have gained the reputation of being challenging,
focused, information, interactive and whenever possible, fun."
While this year's review is complete, plans are being set to deliver
an updated program next February. Registration information will
be available in January.
CONCLAVE
ON CITIES
By Gail Greet Hannah
Some
call them 'hot'. Some call them 'cool.' Cities are on a roll. They're
being rehabilitated, revitalized and re-inhabited--and landscape
architects are major players in the process.
Journalist
Jon Gertner, in Money magazine, calls winners in the urban
revival "hot" cities. Michigan governor, Jennifer Granholm,
calls them "cool" and wants a bunch of them in her state.
After decades of suburban flight, cities large and small are regaining
their allure. The renewed interest in living and working in urban
places, coupled with the growing concern for environmentally responsible
development, offers special opportunities and challenges for landscape
architects.
In
June Landscape Forms, manufacturer of award-winning furniture
and accessories for outdoor environments, hosted a two-day meeting
in Kalamazoo, Michigan to discuss urban revitalization. Dubbed a
"Conclave on Cities, the event was moderated by Metropolis
magazine editor-in-chief Susan Szenasy and attended by thirty-two
landscape architects, architects, urban planners and government
representatives from across the country. Richard Heriford, Landscape
Forms' Vice President of Marketing and mastermind of the conclave,
says "The subject was a natural for us. Our products are in
the center of cities, from New York, Chicago and Atlanta to small
towns all over the country and we make it our business to be informed
about the issues affecting the landscape architecture profession."

ArchFest
Boston 2005 September 19-24, 2005
Celebrating and shaping Boston's built environment
Maybe
you saw it as a passing item in a newsletter. Perhaps you heard
it in a quiet conversation among your colleagues at the office.
You might not have heard about it at all. But its time to
let the secret out ArchFest Boston 2005 is coming to your
town this fall!
What
is ArchFest?
ArchFest Boston 2005 is a groundbreaking gathering that unites users
and creators of Boston's buildings and public spaces. This 6-day
event brings together residents, workers, public officials, designers,
and anyone else interested in shaping Boston's built future for
the 21st century. Through tours, seminars, site visits, and special
events we will provide a variety of forums for Boston neighbors
to come together and discuss the rich history and promising future
of our exceptional city. We hope that ArchFest will sow the seeds
for greater awareness, appreciation, interaction and involvement
in Boston's built environment among all of its users. Learn
