BSLA Shadow-A-Professional Day
The BSLA, in cooperation with student ASLA members at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst; the Boston Architectural College; and the Harvard Graduate School of Design, are excited about a new program, the Shadow-A-Professional Day. This program is designed to give current landscape architecture students a glimpse into the day-to-day workings of professional life.

During the weeks of March 15-19 and March 22-26, the BSLA will pair students with local practitioners for a day providing a personal, one-on-one viewing of what a local landscape architect does. We need volunteers to host a student on one of those days at office. For the best experience, students will be exposed to the numerous aspects of a professional's day, such as client meetings, site visits, project meetings, plan revisions, etc. Whether it be over lunch or during the course of the day, providing your insights as to the realities of being in an office would also be quite helpful to your future colleagues.

There is already significant interest from students in this program and we would like to provide a host for each student. Please sign up at www.surveymonkey.com/s/QY83JB7 by January 19. When an assignment is made, you and the student will receive an email with each other's contact information so that you can finalize the details for this exciting program to our local landscape architecture students. You will receive confirmation of an assignment the first week of March.

ASLA Call for Presentations for 2010 Annual Meeting and EXPO
ASLA is pleased to announce that it is currently accepting proposals for education session presentations for the 2010 annual meeting and EXPO, to be held September 10-13 in Washington, DC. Individuals who are interested in presenting and sharing their knowledge with the landscape architecture profession are encouraged to submit an online proposal by January 27, 2010.

In addition to traditional topics usually presented at the meeting, ASLA is seeking program submissions on emerging trends and technology, including sustainable materials/products, energy conservation, renewable energy, agriculture, and living walls, to name a few.

Click here for complete information on submitting education presentation proposals.

Surveys show that the top reason attendees register for the annual meeting is the education program. The 2010 meeting theme—Earth Air Water Fire DESIGN—reflects the challenge of the profession to improve our world through elemental design.

We hope you will consider submitting a presentation proposal for the 2010 annual meeting and EXPO.

Spirit: Garden Inspiration

A lecture by Dan Pearson

One of the most important and influential landscape designers working today,  Dan will demonstrate his design process, in which he extrapolates on the spirit of place as it emerges through geography, history, architecture and native flora. Dan will explain how he believes landscapes—both wild and designed—speak to us, how human interventions in the landscape can animate and inform, and how they can serve to memorialize and to heal.

Dan trained at Wisley, a Royal Horticultural Society garden, and at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.  He is a weekly gardening columnist for The Observer, before which he was a columnist for The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Times. He is co-author of The Essential Garden Book (with Sir Terence Conran) and author of The Garden: A Year at Home Farm.
