The Boston Landscape Scavenger Hunt,
Part II
So you think you know Boston well? Here is your chance to test your knowledge as you walk the streets of Boston hunting for the known and not so known landscape features that make Boston the treasure it is. This scavenger hunt is open to all landscape architects, designers and associated professionals. The competition for great prizes will be fierce, so be sure to wear comfortable walking/running shoes and bring your camera/camera phone!
The hunt begins at 5:30 pm at Stantec Planning and Landscape Architecture, P.C. (141 Portland Street, Boston) where teams of 4 (either pre-formed or formed on the spot) will gather and form their strategies. Each team will get a sheet of questions and clues and have 2 hours to solve and collect as many as you can.
Teams will then turn in their answer sheets and share their photos by 7:30 pm sharp at a location yet to be disclosed, where refreshments will be served and prizes awarded.
If you can't make the hunt, meet us at the finish line! All are welcome.

American Society of Landscape Architects Names 33 Members to Council of Fellows

Fellows-elect will be inducted during ASLA Annual Meeting in Chicago
Washington, D.C., July 21, 2009 — The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) has announced the selection of 33 members for induction into its distinguished Council of Fellows, among the highest honors the Society may confer upon a member.
Members of the ASLA Council of Fellows are recognized for their extraordinary work, leadership, knowledge, and service to the profession over a sustained period of time. The Fellows-elect will be formally inducted into the Council during the ASLA Annual Meeting in Chicago, September 18-21. Thereafter, they may use the suffix “FASLA” after their names, denoting recognition of their achievements by their peers.
Congratulations to the following BSLA Members on their appointment to the ASLA Council of Fellows:
Niall G. Kirkwood, ASLA,
Harvard University Graduate School of Design Cambridge, Massachusetts, was nominated by the Boston Society of Landscape Architecture Chapter of ASLA for his years as a landscape architecture educator and researcher specializing in technology and its relationship to design in landscape architecture. He has developed a comprehensive body of knowledge through publications, academic graduate courses, and curriculum development on landscape technology.
Kirkwood also serves as director of Harvard's Center for Technology and Environment research center. He earned his bachelor of arts in
1976 and bachelor of architecture in 1978 from the University of Manchester, UK, and his master of landscape architecture in 1985 from the University of Pennsylvania. Kirkwood also received an honorary bachelor of arts from Harvard in 2002 and an honorary doctor of science from the University of Ulster in 2009
Thomas R. Ryan, ASLA,
Ryan Associates, was nominated by the Boston Society of Landscape Architects chapter of ASLA for 30 years of exemplary service to the chapter and the profession. He has been a mentor to hundreds of students who have taken his review course to prepare for the licensure exam and has served as a lecturer and instructor at Harvard University and the University of Virginia. He has staunchly defended professional licensure in Massachusetts and increased the visibility of landscape architecture in housing development - all while running his successful practice. Ryan earned his bachelor of science in landscape architecture in 1975 from the University of Wisconsin - Madison and his master of landscape architecture in 1979 from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design.
James Peter "JP" Shadley, ASLA,
Shadley Associates PC,
Lexington, Massachusetts,
was nominated by the Boston Society of Landscape Architects in recognition of more than 25 years of exceptional contributions to the built environment and the profession.
His extensive portfolio includes award-winning works that vary in scale and project type from historic properties to brownfield, mixed-use transit-oriented developments, and from low-income housing to significant residential estates and beautiful sculptures in the landscape. As a dedicated member of the BSLA since 1992, he has served in many roles, including chapter president and vice president. Shadley earned his bachelor of landscape architecture from the University of Oregon in 1983 and his master of landscape architecture from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design in 1986.
Professor Kirkwood to Receive Honorary Doctorate From the University of Ulster
Niall Kirkwood, Professor of Landscape Architecture and Technology and Chair of the Landscape Architecture Department, will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Science on July 1 from the University of Ulster for his services to Landscape Architecture and for building links between Ireland and Harvard University. He is currently the Gerald O’Hare Visiting Professor at the University of Ulster and has worked closely with its Built Environment and Real Estate Initiative developing advanced graduate studios in Newry, Derry, and Belfast for the GSD.
Professor Kirkwood Named Fellow of Kew Guild
Niall Kirkwood, Chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture and Professor of Landscape Architecture and Technology, has been awarded a Honorary Fellowship for distinguished, international service to the general advancement of landscape architecture and technology. The Kew Guild, founded in 1893, is an Association of The Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, England.

5th Annual NOFA Organic Lawn & Turf Course
The NOFA Organic Land Care Program, a project of the Northeast Organic Farming Association (NOFA) of Massachusetts, will hold the 5th annual NOFA Organic Lawn & Turf Course at UMass Amherst in Amherst, MA on Friday, August 7, 2009 from 8 am to 5 pm (during the 35th Annual NOFA Summer Conference).
The course will also be held Tuesday, August 18 at Duke Farms in Hillsborough, NJ and Thursday, August 20 at Manchester Community College in Manchester, CT.
This one-day, intensive course will provide state-of-the-art information for managing lawns and turf organically and is geared toward land care professionals, groundskeepers and municipalities who are responsible for the establishment and care of grass, as well as anyone interested in learning organic methods. The course will be taught by NOFA Accredited Organic Land Care Professional Donald Bishop of Gardens Are Inc. in Marlborough, MA, CT NOFA Executive Director Bill Duesing of Solar Farm Education in Oxford, CT, nationally renowned organic turfgrass educator Chip Osborne of Osborne Organics in Marblehead, MA, and entomological scientist Dr. Kimberly Stoner of the CT Agricultural Experiment Station in New Haven, CT.
NEW THIS YEAR! The course will include a special section on Water Management and Conservation led by noted engineer and water conservation expert Amy Vickers, president of Amy Vickers & Associates Inc. of Amherst, MA. (In NJ and CT this section will be taught by NOFA Accredited Organic Land Care Professional Frank Koll of Arlington, MA). There will also be plenty of time for Q&A and networking. Lunch is provided.
All course participants will receive a copy of the NOFA Organic Lawn & Turf Handbook: Beautiful Grass Naturally, which serves as the course manual. This 100-page comprehensive, practical and easy-to-use reference manual was written and edited by scientists and experts in the field of organic lawn and turf care, this book covers what landscapers, landscape designers, municipal staff and homeowners need to know to grow natural and organic lawns. Topics include: Why Organic? Site Analysis, Soil Health, Cultural Practices, Weeds, Insects, Diseases, Obtaining Materials and Equipment, Running a Business, Client Relations and much more. Shapers & Pioneers of New York City’s Landscape
New York Botanical Garden
The first in a series of national symposia being held in concert with the book launch of Shaping the American Landscape: New Profiles from the Pioneers of American Landscape Design Project which will be published by the University Press of Virginia in late summer 2009. National speakers will provide a context for some of the most celebrated landscapes in New York City and the immediate region including Central Park, Battery Park, Riverside Park Shoreline and Promenade, and the Merritt Parkway among others. Speakers will explore the lives and built legacies of the designers and stewards of nationally significant historic designed landscapes ranging from estates and subdivisions to parks and scenic reservations. Allston Village Main Streets Seeks Design Committee Members
Allston Village Main Streets (AVSM) is looking for design professionals and others interested in design to sit on its volunteer Design Committee. The Design Committee works to improve the physical appearance of the district. AVMS runs a Facade Improvement Program, which awards design assistance and matching grants. The committee also focuses on public improvements, such as landscaping, street furniture, banners, public art and cleanliness, and on historic preservation efforts. The committee sponsors occasional clean-ups and ongoing graffiti-removal.
