American Society of Landscape Architects green roof - Up on the roof
GardenDesignOnline - You could hold a big party up on the new roof of 636 I Street NW in Washington DC -- headquarters of the American Society of Landscape Architects. The plants are still growing in, but you can see the greenery from street level, and tours will soon be underway by appointment. ASLA unveiled the 3300 square foot project this week and hopes it will inspire others to plant their roofs as well. Nancy Somerville, ASLA's Executive Vice President/CEO, said green roofs in general have positive environmental benefits in cities "where green space is at a premium."… This roof was designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates Inc., of Cambridge, MA and New York City. Landscape architect Chris Counts said the designers wanted to use the roof as an educational tool and also take the concept a step further to "what the next generation of green roofs would be like."

Design Competitions

Poligon’s Annual “Reflecting Place” Design Competition
To commemorate the annual ASLA Expo, Poligon sponsors a shelter design competition for ASLA members. The theme of this year’s competition is “Into the Blue” and asks members to submit designs that address all things aquatic. Whether it’s seaside architecture, naturally occurring waterside phenomena, or water itself, Poligon is asking Landscape Architects to design shelters, trellises or gazebos with these ideas in mind.

The winning entry will be constructed, displayed at the 2006 ASLA Expo, and subsequently donated to a city chosen by the winner. Past winners include “A Western Skyline” by Salt Lake City, Utah, firm Landscape Design, and “Santa Fe” by Jesse Scott, Sites Southwest, Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Photographs of these winners, the official Call for Entries, and a press section are all available on the Poligon website at http://www.poligon.com. Registrations for participation are due by May 12, and final materials are due June 30.

Compost--the Sustainable Choice
By Ron Alexander, Co-manager, US Composting Council's Seal of Testing Assurance Program

Can landscape architects be sustainable and environmentally minded when it comes to establishing new landscape and turf-planting areas? At the same time, can they be economically practical and functional? They can be if they're using compost. More environmentally sustainable than peat, bark and topsoi, compost use in landscaping has been well researched, proving it to be an effective product for improving deficient soils physically, chemically and microbiologically.

It is well documented that there has been a significant reduction in soil quality across the nation. It has also become more difficult for those in the landscaping industry to obtain functioning, landscape-grade soils they can use on projects. Fortunately, however, this situation has coincided with an increase in compost production. Although poor soil conditions make it more difficult and costly to manage the landscape, we know that by improving soil health, or enriching it with stabilized organic matter (compost), not only can plant growth be improved but sustainability of landscapes also is improved. The growth of the commercial composting industry has made it a viable supplier of high quality compost to the landscape industry.

Of course, not all composting facilities produce a commercial-grade product, and, for that reason, it is key that any compost specified for use by landscape architects be regularly tested by a third-party lab. The U.S. Composting Council (USCC) developed its Seal of Testing Assurance (STA) Program in March 2000 to manage such a program and improve a customer's ability to select, purchase and use compost.

The program rules require participating facilities to sample and test their compost products on an ongoing basis by a network of certified laboratories that use uniform protocols provided by USCC. It also requires the disclosure of test analyses and product ingredient data, as well as end-use instructions to compost customers. This, of course, is what you would expect when specifying or using any horticultural product. When your ready to use compost, specify STA Program certified composts.

For details about the STA Program, see the attached pdf - http://www.BSLAweb.org/pdf/02STAMainPromoPiece.pdf.

For a list of STA Program-certified composters, visit USCC's Web site, www.compostingcouncil.org, and click on STA Program.
