BSLA Student Scholarship Program

The Boston Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects is pleased to announce that applications are being accepted for the BSLA Scholarship Program for students pursuing an education in the field of Landscape Architecture. This year BSLA is offering up to three $1,500 scholarships to be used for the 2010/2011 academic year. Eligible students must be legal residents of Massachusetts, Maine or New Hampshire, but may attend a program anywhere in the country.

The 2010 BSLA Student Scholarship application form and guidelines may also be downloaded from http://www.bslaweb.org/scholarship.htm. If you have any questions about the scholarship, please send an email to the BSLA Chapter Office.

All applications must be submitted electronically and be emailed by noon, May 28, 2010.

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT

Coplon Associates, a progressive, award winning landscape architecture firm located in Bar Harbor, Maine, is seeking a creative, self-motivated landscape architect with one to three years of experience. The position will be available in May/June of 2010. CA is an established practice with extensive experience in projects ranging from large-scale land planning to detailed garden design. We have provided land planning assistance to the conservation community in various capacities for 23 years and have projects, both active and completed, throughout the eastern United States and Canada.

We are looking for a talented, technically proficient project landscape architect to assume a variety of design responsibilities ranging from conceptualization to construction documentation. Candidates must have strong graphic and verbal communication skills and demonstrated fluency in AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch-Up, ArcGIS and the Microsoft Office suite. Familiarity with native plants of the Northeast is preferred. Candidates should have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture from an accredited program and have the ability to work independently in a relaxed, studio-oriented office. Incumbent is expected to have experience in landscape research and projects focusing on different types of historic landscapes such as historic battlefields, farmsteads, and vernacular settlements, urban settings, designed gardens and estates.

Major Duties:

The incumbent serves as a specialist for one or more parks in the landscape architecture profession with a practical knowledge in the technical methods, practices, and principles of preserving cultural landscapes.  Cultural landscape preservation focuses on preserving a landscapes physical attributes, biotic systems, and use when that use contributes to its historical significance.  Research, planning, and stewardship are the framework of the duties of a historical landscape architect.  Research defines the features, values, and associations that make landscape historically significant; planning identifies the issues and alternatives for long-term preservation; and stewardship involves activities such as condition assessment, maintenance, and training.

Qualifications:

BASIC REQUIREMENT: All applicants must FIRST meet the basic requirements and THEN meet the grade level requirement to be qualified for this position.

BASIC REQUIREMENT:

(1) .  Degree: landscape architecture or landscape design;

---OR---    

(2) Combination of education and experience - for each year short of graduation, the applicant must have had 1 year of experience under professional leadership and guidance of such character and diversity as to be a satisfactory substitute for the required education. The experience must have included original landscape design.  

Evaluation of Experience: The following kinds of experience ARE NOT acceptable as professional landscape architectural experience: routine drafting or developing of plans where original investigations or designs are not involved; laying out or executing illustrations in black-and-white or in color; nursery work involving the propagation of trees, shrubs, vines, etc., experimental, horticultural, or landscape gardening; breeding, testing, propagation, culture, and production of plants, flowers, trees, crops, etc,; forestry work involving the management of forest resources for the continuous production of timber, water, forage, and other forest values; architectural and engineering work limited to the design of structures; work in city and community planning that relates primarily to the broad social and economic growth of cities and communities and the organization of community services and facilities.

Once you meet one of the basic requirements above you must then meet the grade level requirement below for the GS-9 grade level:

GS-9 GRADE LEVEL:  EDUCATION: 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent (related degree required); 

------OR------   

EXPERIENCE: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 grade level.  Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant wit the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience include but are not limited to: experience researching landscape history using archival, graphic, and manuscript materials and writing original narrative history based on research findings; experience interpreting the contents of historic photographs to determine the genus and species of historic plants along with the presence or absence of other features appearing in the photographs; experience interpreting historic maps and drawings in order to graphically depict fixed points of time during the physical evolution of a landscape.

EDUCATION for both basic requirement and qualification at the GS-9 level: Education must have been obtained in an accredited college, college or university.  If qualifying based on education you must submit a copy of your transcripts.  Unofficial transcripts will be accepted at the time of application.  If selected for the position you will be required to provide an official transcript.

You must be a U.S. citizen to qualify for this position.

Upon consideration of all qualified candidates, a tentative selection will be offered pending a successful completion of a pre-employment background investigation. 

Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid.

How You Will Be Evaluated:

You will be evaluated to determine if you meet the minimum qualifications required; and on the extent to which your application shows that you possess the knowledges, skills, and abilities associated with this position as defined below.

Applicants must provide a written response to each of the below statements, limiting your responses to 2 pages per statement.  When describing your knowledges, skills, and abilities, please be sure to give examples and explain how often you used these skills, the complexity of the knowledge you possessed, the level of the people you interacted with, the sensitivity of the issues you handled, etc.

1.  Knowledge of landscape architectural design concepts, techniques and principles as they apply to historic landscape research and planning.

2.  Ability to perform historical research, conduct field investigations, analyze data, and prepare reports, plans, specifications, and cost estimates to support planning for cultural landscape preservation.

3.  Ability to develop and prepare landscape construction plans and specifications that are compatible with historic character and protect and preserve cultural landscape features.

4.  Ability to inventory and document historic landscape features.

5.  Ability to communicate effectively through writing, speaking and drawing.

6.  Ability to work effectively with computers and computer technology.    

Once your qualifications have been evaluated, your application will be assigned a numeric score.  The minimum earned rating of 70 points plus the earned rating for the Knowledges, Skills and Abilities will be totaled to arrive at the total earned rating.  Eligible veterans who meet established criteria will receive additional points on their total score as a result of their military service as appropriate.  Those applicants with the highest scores will be referred to the selection official.  Please review your KSAs carefully.

For CTAP/ICTAP, well qualified means that the applicant meets the qualification standards and eligibility requirements for the position, meets minimum educational and experience requirements, meets all selective factors where applicable, and is able to satisfactorily perform the duties of the position upon entry.  Qualified CTAP/ICTAP candidates with a score of 85 or higher will be referred to the selecting official.
