2009 BSLA Annual Award Program
Recognizing Excellence in Landscape Architecture

Thank you to all who submitted works to the BSLA Annual Award Program. We received 59 submissions (up from last year). The jury will convene on Saturday, March 14 and all award recipients will be notified that following Monday and Tuesday by phone or email. Letters will be sent out on March 18 by standard mail to all who submitted, formalizing whether or not their project received an award, and providing a summary of the jurors' review comments.

The Award presentations will be held at the Annual BSLA Celebration Gala on Thursday, May 7, 2009 at the Hotel Marlowe in Cambridge. Please click here for invitation and registration information.


Vincent N. Merrill, FASLA

Copley Wolff Design Group (CWDG) along with EDAW, Inc. is the recipient of an Honor Award for Group Landscape Architecture for our work on the Wharf District Park on Boston's Rose Kennedy Greenway from the Maryland and Potomac Chapters of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA). The Maryland and Potomac Chapters of the American Society of Landscape Architects presented this prestigious award at their 2008 design awards banquet December 9, 2008.

Permeable Pavement and Rainwater Harvesting Presentations

The permeable pavement and rainwater harvesting presentations will be held Friday at the Best Western Hotel in Marlboro, MA. In conjunction with the presentations, visitors can tour the adjacent Royal Trade Plaza where UniExpo 2009 is being held.  This one-acre exposition features both permeable pavement and rainwater harvesting in action. 

Please find attached information on the presentations and an additional overview of Unilock’s AIA accredited outline.  LA’s can receive CEU for this session. Achieving LEED credit and permeable pavement as a BMP in LID will be addressed.


Call for Display Garden Proposals
Deadline February 27

The Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens invites landscape architects, landscape designers, nursery owners/operators, and other garden professionals to submit proposals to design and build outdoor display gardens for its second annual Garden Fair. This multifaceted event takes inspiration from the world's best and most famous flower shows and garden fairs including Chelsea and Philadelphia while remaining true to our Maine heritage. The event will take place at the Gardens in Boothbay, Maine from Friday, June 19 – Sunday, June 21, 2009.

The display gardens are to be installed on the Central Campus. In honor of the grand opening of the Lerner Garden of the Five Senses (June 19), the theme for 2009 is “A Delight for the Senses.”

Saving Our Trees: A Conference for Arborists, Foresters, Tree Wardens, Sugar Bush Owners and Anyone Who Loves Trees

This one-day conference is designed for arborists, tree wardens, municipal managers, city planners, foresters, sugar bush owners and landscape architects who are involved with the management of property, both private and public.

With the identification of the Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB) in central Massachusetts, it is imperative that anyone responsible for land and tree management have an understanding of this major pest. This conference will review the ALB, what is being done to manage it, and what you can do. Additional topics include identification of plant health care problems in New England, fruit tree management, conservation laws and regulations, and nutrient management.

Three pesticide contact hours available for categories 29, 36 and Applicator's License. ISA, SAF, MCA, MCH and MCLP credits requested.

Each year, the ASLA Student Awards give us a glimpse into the future of the profession.

Award recipients receive featured coverage in Landscape Architecture magazine and in many other design and construction industry and general interest media. Award recipients, their clients, and advisors will be honored at the Awards Presentation Ceremony followed by a special champagne event during the ASLA Annual Meeting and EXPO in Chicago, September 18-21, 2009.

The prestige of the ASLA awards program relies in large part on the high-caliber juries that are convened each year to review submissions.
